Well I haven’t updated this blog in a while; this is just a quick one to announce part 2 of the Traktor beatgridding tutorial; this one focuses on drum n bass and dubstep tracks. At first these tracks seem a lot harder to grid than house music - and they often are - but the exact same principles apply. Both of these styles are notoriously rigid in their structure and time signature — you’re almost always dealing with heavily syncopated 4/4 beats. This is not the best video — my speaking skills here are testament to why you should always write a script first rather than ad libbing — but hopefully some folks will find it helpful. Enjoy!

Traktor Pro Beatgrids Revisited
Traktor Pro is an incredibly powerful piece of software. In order to tap into most of that power, however, the software requires proper track preparation. The most important step in this preparation is beatgridding — without proper beatgridding, the SYNC command won’t work properly, the phase meters will give you inaccurate information, and loops will be useless. You can always correct these problems by riding your pitch control with a keen ear like we learned to do with real vinyl, but reliable and solid beatgrids can give the Traktor DJ a hell of a lot more flexibility.
Although there are multiple beatgrid tutorials available — including this one from DJTechTools and this one from Rainer G. Haselier’s outstanding Traktor Bible, as well as this one from the Dubspot — the task is still pretty daunting for the beginner. Users are routinely frustrated by tracks that aren’t auto-beatgridded correctly as well as more complex tracks with drift or even major changes in tempo. A more thorough understanding of beatgrids in Traktor is essential to using the software effectively. Once you understand beatgridding at a more fundamental level, you will be able to set up perfect beatgrids in seconds.
What are beatgrids?
First, it’s vital to clarify what beatgrids are and what they are not. Beatgrids are made up of markers that indicate where the beat should be. The most important - and most often misunderstood - fact about Traktor beatgrids is that they are based entirely on the BPM tag of the song file rather than on the actual sound of the beat. If the BPM value is not accurate, your grid markers will simply not be on beat.
Beatmarker cuepoints
A lot of confusion arises because Traktor uses white lines to indicate the beatgrids that have been set. The program also unfortunately uses the same white lines when a beatgrid has not been set to indicate the volume peaks. The volume peaks are Traktor’s guesses as to where a beat could be — if you are listening to straight ahead four-on-the-floor house music, those might be the exact same place. But if there is anything more complicated going on in the time signature of the song, you will have peaks that don’t always coincide with properly set beat markers. In order to determine whether you are looking at a beatgrid or volume peaks, look for a beatmarker cuepoint — this is a cuepoint that has a telltale upside down white triangle indicating it marks the beginning of a beatgrid. If this cuepoint doesn’t exist, there is no beatgrid on the track.
Adjusting BPM values
If you have automatic beatgridding turned on during track analysis, Traktor will try to guess the first downbeat and set a beatgrid cuepoint there. Everything after that is arranged according to the BPM value — so if the value is 87, there will be exactly 87 beat markers in the first minute of the song, spaced exactly the same amount of time apart, whether or not there are actually 87 beats there. So obviously, getting the BPM value correct is crucial — if you are having trouble gridding a track, always double check the BPM — sometimes there are pretty obvious errors in Traktor’s automatic track analysis. It’s good to double check these values because if the value is way off, it will take you forever to fix it using the Widen/Tighten Beatgrid buttons.
I use an external BPM counter like this one for the iPhone or this one for my Palm Centro to catch major errors. If the BPM is off by a lot, go ahead and click the BPM value in the window and change the number manually and then use the Widen/Tighten Beatgrid buttons in order to fine tune the value.
Using your ears
The key to superfast beatgridding is using your ears. You can get started using the metronome clicks to hear when the beatgrid starts to go off, or even use a reference track and match the track you are analyzing while you are gridding. When the BPM value is only slightly off you may not notice it at first — in the beginning of the track, everything will seem to line up fine, but if you click forward to the end of the track, you will notice if the grid is off. Assuming there are peak points at every beat, you will be able to see this visually, and you can adjust the grid visually.
One great trick to really fast and accurate beatgridding is to jump around the track using the mouse after you have set the first beatmarker. If the grid is perfectly set up, you should be able to jump all around the track while it is playing and everything should still sound perfectly on time. This technique will let you determine right away if the tempo is even the slightest bit off, and you can make fine-tune adjustments immediately.
Once you get the hang of this, you will be able to set most of your beatgrids in mere seconds. You can even set up beatgrids on the fly if you have to — although I don’t really recommend relying on this, I have successfully beatgrid tracks in my headphones while playing another track live. If you like to fly by the seat of your pants, just set the first beatmarker and then turn on the SYNC button — you’ll be able to scan through the track and correct the beatgrid by ear while your other track is playing.
Beat counting
Of course, where you set the first grid cuepoint is critical. Traktor will start counting from that point; it is generally best to make sure that your first grid cuepoint begins on the first beat count, where you would count “1-2-3-4″ in a 4/4 track. Traktor provides an internal beat counter that begins with that cuepoint — that cuepoint represents 1.1.1 on the beat counter. The beat counter is broken down by phrase, bar, and beat — so 24.6.3 means third beat of the sixth bar of the 24th phrase. A “bar” is 4 beats. A “phrase” can be any number of bars; in the Traktor preferences (Transport –> Beat Counter) you can set the value anywhere from 0 to 64 bars. I generally have this set to 8 bars per phrase. You can tell Traktor to display the beat count in the deck display — just go to Deck Details –> Deck Heading and select “Beats” in one of the drop down menus. (Another useful option is “Beats to Cue,” which will count beats backwards from the next cue point). This can be extremely useful in terms of seeing where you are in a track and determining your next mix point.
Tempo drifts and changes
Of course, getting a perfect beat grid like this assumes you have a track that has a consistent BPM throughout the track. In many cases you will be dealing with tracks that do not have such DJ-friendly features. There are several situations where this is the case — (1) a live drummer, (2) an inaccurate recording of the track, and (3) an intentional BPM change by the artist. If you only play house music with drum machines you won’t encounter these issues as often, but if you play rock, funk, reggae, or other genres you may find beatgridding very frustrating.
Such tracks can be very difficult to grid accurately, and Traktor’s current solution to this problem leaves a bit to be desired. Basically, Traktor allows you to set up a second (or third, or fourth) beatmarker in order to “correct” for drift. The problem is that the new beatmarker does not reset the beatcounter, and it does not allow for a different BPM — this works best on tracks where the BPM stays the same but there is a breakdown somewhere that ignores the beat count. In those cases, your BPM value doesn’t change, but your second beatmarker allows for a second grid at a new starting point. Your beatcounter values might be inaccurate after the second beatmarker, but at least the beats will line up. (Hopefully Traktor will address this in a future update, allowing for 2 or more different BPM values on the same track and giving you the option of restarting the beat count when necessary).
Your best bet in these situations is often to use loops. Find a good loop at the beginning and ending of the song (or at your mix-in and mix-out points) and set a grid that works for that loop. Then you can match beats using the loops, and just ignore the fact that the beat grid is off for much of the rest of the song. Again, this isn’t an ideal solution, but Traktor at least allows for these situations to be dealt with gracefully.
Locking the beatgrid
Once you have your beatgrid set the way you want it, it is a good practice to click the “lock” icon in order to write this information to the file and to keep Traktor from messing with it. The lock icon will appear in your browser window — that way when you are choosing tracks you will know right away if the track has a beatgrid that you have checked or not. If you find that you have a locked track that you want to make adjustments on, all you have to do is click the lock again to unlock it.
Of course, you can use Traktor without ever beatgridding your tracks. But you will lose a lot of the software’s features and flexibility and your focus will be centered on beatmatching. With proper beatgrids, you can be confident in the phase meters and the SYNC command, and you can concentrate on adjusting levels, EQs, effects, as well as playing loops and jumping around on beat. It may seem like a huge task at first, especially if you are starting with thousands of un-gridded mp3s, but once you get the hang of it you will find that a few seconds of beatgridding will save you hours of aggravation in the long run.
Well I didn’t make it to NAMM but have been paying close attention to what has been announced; the big news for many is the Serato-Ableton announcement that we’ve been on the edges of our seats about for well over a year now. CDM has the rundown and a fervent discussion; you can find more details about most of the new toys at scratchworx and djtechtools, among other DJ news sites. Items that stand out include American Audio’s all-in-one sound card and MIDI controller VSM4 — check videos at scratchworx. They say street price will be $500 (though their website says 699); either way you get a lot of kit for that. Looks great for Traktor but no word if it will work on Serato ITCH for those excited about “the Bridge,” which Serato and Ableton say is only part one of their relationship.
There’s a lot of other cool shit - new phono cartridges from an Ortofon/Serato love-in, a $2599 4-channel 2-computer pioneer-lookin mixer from Rane, a new controller from Numark that looks like a tabletop CD player, a new KAOS pad, a spaceship-looking turntable controller from OTUS, etc. Read the rundowns at the above sites if you want to drool over more toys; chances are if you’re reading this you’ve probably already done that.
And for all of us who couldn’t make it, they have preserved on youtube this panel at Wham Bamm Thank You NAMM — moderated by Peter Kirn of CDM and including several controllerism visionaries including Justin Boreta and EdIT of Glitch Mob, Richard Devine, Moldover, and more. And Part 4 of the video features a discussion of what I think is the coolest controller to come out of this, Moldover’s Mojo. The Mojo won’t be cheap (20 of them will go at $1799, and they will go fast I’m sure) but it will definitely be a hell of a lot of fun — arcade buttons, toggle switches, faders, and touch strips all ergonomically arranged for maximum devastation. You can check videos of Moldover playing early versions of the Mojo on youtube as well. Wow, just wow.

It’s official; professor ben will be kickin beats and knowledge at the annual Pop conference at the Experience Music Project | Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington. I’ll be joined by fellow artists/appropriationists TradeMark G of the Evolution Control Committee, DJ Gavana, and Kumquat. The conference theme is “Dance Music Sex Romance,” and our performance and presentation explores some of the questions and challenges raised by electronic dance music to the sexual body.

Well, I tried out Nicecast tonight and mixed for about an hour. Nicecast is shoutcasting software from Rogue Amoeba — it basically uploads a sound signal from your computer to the internet, “broadcasting” it like a radio station. I was mixing on my turntables and sending the signal from my mixer (Rane TTM-56 if anyone is wondering; it’s about 9 years old) to the sound card on my computer (crappy M-Audio Audiophile Firewire box but it does the job) and through Nicecast, which turned it into an mp3 stream (you can set the bitrate) and broadcast it through port 8000, giving me a URL at the click of a button. It took me a few tries to figure out that I had to open up that port on my router, but once I did that, I was broadcasting. I pasted the link in facebook and twitter; according to the software I wound up with 19 listeners! Not a ton but that’s way more than I thought I’d have. One buddy told me the signal cut out quite a few times; apparently your upload speed will be better if you turn off bittorrent. whoops!
It was way too easy; I am going to be doing this again frequently, I think. Paired with a No-IP free DNS pointer, it’s an instant radio station! I’ll announce on twitter when I’m broadcasting, but if you’re dying to check I’ll be using this URL: http://turntable.servebeer.com:8000/listen.m3u (eventually I’ll add a link for this).
And if you’re still waiting for that SCS.3D review, it’s coming soon… if you just want the short version: ho-hum. Pretty cool but there may be better things you can do with your $250. Peace
Most of the digital DJ world is aware by now of a recent announcement from Traktor as well as a joint announcement from Serato and Ableton regarding upcoming products. Traktor announced the upgrade of their products to “Pro” versions, due out November 1st. Their site describing the new products is here; while this is welcome news, I have to admit to being a tad underwhelmed with the new features, and to being a little suspicious that this is just an excuse to make users pay more for an upgrade than we might otherwise be willing to shell out. I’m particularly bothered by what’s missing in the new Traktor — you’d think by now, for example, that makers of digital DJ software would have taken Serato’s cue regarding waveform display and provide different views of bass, treble, and midrange both by color and by breakdown as has been available in Serato for a long time. The “New User Interface” they’re advertising offers some genuine improvements over the old, but it really is just an upgrade. Nevertheless, for those who want to use DJ software without turntable control, Traktor DJ Studio is still the best product out there, and Traktor Pro is sure to be welcomed by many users.
Much more exciting — yet far more vague — is the recent joint announcement from Serato and Ableton about an upcoming collaboration. It’s entirely unclear whether they will release a product together or simply make their two “Live” products (Serato Scratch Live and Ableton Live) more compatible. (And yes, people are already making the “2 Live Crew” jokes). Either way, this is a welcome announcement for those of us interested in using both tools in performance situations; they cover very different ground and each product is by far the best in its class. Serato CEO Steve West announced, “After years of talking together, we’re thrilled to be working with Ableton. It’s exciting to think about what we can offer to DJs and producers: the ability to go beyond just spinning records and add a personal stamp to the music they play.”
Hopefully we will see the result of this creative partnership in action soon, perhaps by the time of NAMM in January. But Peter Kirn warns us not to get too excited given the vaporware announcement of Ableton’s partnership with Cycling ‘74 (makers of Max/MSP). Who knows; clearly at this point Serato and Ableton want us wetting our pants about this but they’re not yet ready to tell us exactly what to expect.
On another note entirely, I did finally get “dascratch” from guitar center last week, and I was playing with it a bit while I was in Nashville this weekend. I’m going to do some practicing with it this week and will post a review soon.
Getting sick of scratching that “aaahhh” sound over and over again? Super Duck Breaks no longer doing it for ya? Thanks to the ubiquity of digital DJing solutions, you no longer need to wait for someone to make a scratch record pressing that South Park sample you love so much on wax. Jamie Dubs (who is behind the Free Art and Technology lab) has made a couple of break records available in mp3 format, including the terrific Internet Meme Breaks, which you can see him scratching in the video at the link. You too can make your own breaks records using found audio from various sources available on the internet. The One Laptop per Child initiative (OLPC) may have blown it by selling out to Microsoft, but they have nevertheless started something really cool with their free sound sample library, which we have a permanent link to on this blog. And if you’re looking for a searchable topic index of samples of politicians saying stupid things, look no further than GAUDI, the new audio search engine from google focused on political videos and sounds. And of course the Internet Audio Archive from archive.org is a great source of public domain audio material from public service announcements to poetry readings to Grateful Dead shows and who knows what else. Carnaval of Batman - This one is a couple years old I think … a little ethnic percussion oriented house and electronic … there’s sort of a train wreck in there but I try to ignore it; most of the mix is pretty good
Che’s Lounge - Slow and loungy, this dates back to 2003 I think, and still may be one of my best recorded mixes.
